Lymphatic System Health
The Lymphatic System ComponentsThe lymphatic system consists of a network of vessels that drain tissue fluid into lymph nodes and are a part of our immune system. This system moves slowly from our lower extremities upward and end at two points on either side of the chest. Lymph drains downward slowly from the neck and shoulder to these same points. Enhanced lymph movement is possible with two methods. An Aromatherapy Massage or Dry Body Brushing are effective for this process of moving the lymph along to enhance our immune response and for cancer and disease prevention. The immune system is our defence against illness and disease. (cleanup crew). Immunity / Immune Response is the body's ability to repel and eliminate foreign substances and cells. Lymph Nodes act to filter and remove invading organisms and abnormal cells from the lymph fluid and process them so they can be eliminated. Lymph Fluid is a clear whitish / yellowish fluid that contains white blood cells (lymphocites), proteins, and some red blood cells. Signs and Symptoms of a Healthy Immune SystemLymph nodes may become enlarged or swollen when they are fighting infection. We notice them often in the neck area (submandibular). Enlarged, means that the lymph nodes are working. When the infection subsides the lymph node should return to normal. External Lymph Nodes can be palipitated (felt).Location of Peripheral Lymph Nodes (External)
Lymph nodes may feel tender or inflamed (reacting to foreign bodies). Lymph nodes may swell from the formation of an abscess, or if they contain cancer cells. Dry Brushing
Dry brushing is intended to exfoliate the skin, removing layers of dead skin cells and assist the Lymphatic Drainage. The Lymphatic Drainage refers to the bodies system that defends the body from disease and toxic substances. It is made up of a wide network of lymphatic vessels. The body contains lymph nodes, which contains cells sensitive to changes in the composition of the lymph. Larger lymph organs include the thymus, tonsils and spleen. The lymph system moves slowly on its own, therefore it is beneficial to ones health to help move it along so that the body may rid itself of toxins. Most often we will notice painful lymph nodes in the neck prior to becoming ill. These lymph nodes are congested. The body is working to rid itself of bacteria and virus.
Begin with the dry brush and a dry body. You may want to do this standing in the shower or tub as you will be shedding a layer of dead skin. You will first open up the ankles, brushing upward, then open up the backs of the knees, followed by the groin. Lymph moves from the bottom up so always brush upwards. Open up the chest area brushing down from to the shoulder to mid upper chest which I where the lymph drains to on either side of the chest. Brush the neck down to mid chest and with arms raised open up the crease of the elbow. Return to the feet stroking upwards on the entire body; up towards the chest, the back, the neck the shoulders and down the raised arms. If you are able do this once a week, great! It's invigorating, wakes up the body and releases toxins. You may notice a significant change in body odour. This is the toxins being released. You will know it works. Pass this info on with a dry brush as an inexpensive gift that says, I care. |
